Additional Information
Periodontists are dentistry's experts in treating periodontal disease. They receive additional university dental qualifications specialising in the management of periodontal (gum) diseases in both non-surgical and surgical procedures, and also perform periodontal plastic surgery. In general, they specialise in the placement and management of dental implants.
Dental implants Adelaide are designed to provide the foundation that support teeth that will look, feel, and chew like natural teeth. The implants are screws made from titanium that are placed surgically into the jawbone and once these heal or mesh with the bone, these titanium screws are the stable anchors for which artificial teeth can be attached. Dental Implants also help preserve facial features and prevent further bone deterioration that occurs naturally once teeth are lost.
Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason please contact us for further information.
There are many periodontal benefits, which can be achieved with our treatments. Science has proven that bacteria from periodontal infections can travel through the blood stream and affect other areas of the body, sometimes causing heart and respiratory diseases. Scaling and root planing remove bacteria that cause these conditions.
Another benefit of treatment is protecting teeth against tooth loss. When gum pockets exceed 4mm in depth, the risk for periodontal disease increases. Pockets deepen, more bacteria colonise, and eventually causes an inflammatory response by the body that destroys the gingival and bone tissue and subsequently leads to tooth loss.
Additionally, an added bonus with scaling and root planning is that it can reduce bad breath caused from food particles and bacteria in the oral cavity. However, good gum health also requires your input as well. You need to be able to properly brush, floss and sustain regular professional cleans (at least twice per year).
A recent development in periodontal therapy is the Periolase® MVP-7™laser with the LANAP protocol. This laser therapy works by targeting only the infected gum and has the ability to distinguish between infected and healthy gum. The infected or diseased gums are darker than healthy gums and the laser can stimulate the healthy gum tissue to reattach to the bone. By stimulating regrowth of the underlying connective tissue, this creates a much lower chance of gum disease returning than with traditional surgery.
Because of the laser’s ability to target and remove only diseased tissue, Dr Drouganis is able to help restore you to health with no or minimal post-operative pain and fewer side effects (less tooth sensitivity) than traditional surgery. This laser treatment is heavily reliant on you maintaining a good oral home care program.
Product and Services
If you’ve discovered you have periodontal (gum) disease, you’re not alone. Many people in Australia currently have some form of the disease. Periodontal diseases range from simple gum inflammation, to serious infection that can result in major damage to the gum and bone that supports the teeth and can subsequently lead to tooth loss.
The preservation of your natural, healthy smile and your ability to chew comfortably and efficiently through periodontal treatment or, if need be, through the help of dental implants, are the primary goals of your treatment.
After periodontal treatment, sustaining healthy and stable gums requires that you maintain good daily oral care at home and have regular dental checkups with professional hygiene cleans on an ongoing basis. Once you have periodontal disease, you are always a periodontal patient. We can’t eliminate periodontal disease, but we can manage it and prevent tooth loss. For example, someone with high blood pressure may take tablets and exercise to manage their condition, but if they stop, their high blood pressure will return. Periodontitis is the same: it needs continuous management.
When gingivitis is not treated, it can advance to “periodontitis”. This means the gums have “inflammation that is affecting the underlying supporting structures of the tooth, such as the ligaments and bone.” In periodontitis, gums detach from the teeth and form spaces (called “pockets”) that become infected from bacteria found in dental plaque. For people with periodontitis, it means their immune system is compromised as bacteria have an easier pathway to cause infection.
The body’s immune system tries to combat the bacterial toxins found in the dental plaque and, because its compromised state, it becomes overwhelmed and leads to the breakdown of the connective tissue (the periodontal ligaments and the bone that holds the teeth in place). If not properly managed, it can lead to tooth loss.
